In nineteen thirty, approximately thirty Greenland muskox were captured and transported to Fairbanks, Alaska, and later migrated to the Bering Sea island of Nunivak.  Over the next three decades this very small herd grew to numbers close to eight hundred.  These muskox where then transplanted into the mainland of Alaska and the herd today's numbers close to five thousand muskox.

Both the males and females of this species have horns, a hump between their shoulders, and an extremely short tail.  However, the males do have longer horns and give off a very pungent odor to attract females.  Their diet consists of vegetation ranging from grasses to more woody plant types.  Muskox can make extremely cool mounts and mature adults can provide over two hundred pounds of meat for the freezer.

Mainly found throughout the Northwest Territories and Greenland, within the United States the Muskox can also be found and hunted in Alaska.  This animal has an extremely thick coat to protect against the arctic environments in which it lives.  During the nineteen twenties the muskox had been totally exterminated from Alaska and the only remaining species survived in eastern Greenland and within the Canadian Artic.
