The Bushbuck is a species of antelope that can be found in wooded areas throughout many parts of Africa. The Bushbuck actually includes two species of animal, the kewel and the imbabala.  The Kewel is generally a reddish to yellow color, while the imbabala coloration can vary depending upon where in Africa it lives.  This type of antelope is quickly identified by its white strips and dots.

Bushbuck

Hunt Bontebok in:  South Africa

The Bontebok is a medium sized antelope that can be found in southern Africa.  When compared to some of the other smaller to medium sized antelope the bontebok stands a bit taller at up to a little over three foot tall at the shoulders.    The bontebok is generally a very dark brown with white down its lower legs, face, and rump.
The Sable has a number of subspecies and depending upon type and location could be known as: black sable, giant sable, common sable, southern sable, eastern sable, Matsetsi sable, or Zambian.  Generally weighing in at around five hundred pounds, they range in color from a darker reddish brown to black.  Both the males and females of this species have long ringed horns, which can five feet in length.

Sable

The roan is one of the largest varieties of antelope found throughout many regions within Africa.  Weighing in at over six hundred pounds this species can be identified by the white around its eyes and checks, which is highlighted by black stripes.  Roan is a commonly used term to describe animal fur that is a reddish brown color, which is the color of the roan antelope.

Roan

The Ostrich is perhaps best known for its ability to run a rapid speeds, reaching up to roughly forty miles per hour.  This flightless bird species is also well known for laying the largest egg of any living bird.  The ostrich primarily feeds on plants and other vegetation, however will also eat insects.  Typically ostriches will be found in small to medium size groups.

Ostrich

The Gemsbok, also often referred to as the Oryx, is a larger species of antelope.  This species of antelope can be found throughout southern Africa and is easily identified by its grey body and black and white striped underbelly and face.  Reaching weights of over six hundred pounds, they have spectacular horns that on average reach lengths of nearly three feet long.

Oryx (Gemsbok)

Nyala

The Nyala, also known as an inyala, can be found through many portions of Africa.  The Nyala is a darker brown to gray color with vertical strips.  The males of the species have large yellow tipped horns that can grow over two feet in length.  The Nyala can generally be found near fresh water sources feeding on vegetation, typically alone or in a very small family group.  Nyala grow to weights near three hundred pounds.

Lechwe

Known for its distinctive spiraled horns the Kudu is one of the most sought after game species in Africa by hunters.  Although the meat is much gamier in taste than some of the other species of African antelope, it still makes for a great meal and outstanding trophy mount.  The Kudu can often be located in small herds and can be harvested with many calibers of firearms from a .270 on up.

Kudu

The Klipspringer is a small species of African antelope, which live on and near rocky outcrops.  Their name in Afrikaans literally means rock jumper.  This species of antelope has very small horns which are less than six inches in length.
The Impala is a medium sized African antelope that stands about three foot tall at the shoulders and weighs between one hundred and one hundred and fifty pounds. Impalas are capable of reaching high speeds and are well known for their ability to leap at distances of over thirty feet.  This is a very popular species of antelope, which is included in most hunting packages and often used as leopard bait.
The Hartebeest is a larger sized species of African antelope, which grazes primarily on grass and is considered by many to be one of the more delicious game animals in Africa.  Hartebeest generally travel in smaller herds of less than one hundred animals and are considered to be an easier hunt.  There are several species of Hartebeest including the Bubal, Coke’s, Lelwel, Lichtenstein’s, Red, Swayne’s, Tora, and Western.

Hartbeest

Black Wildebeest

The Wildebeest is often also known and referenced as gnus.  This species of antelope can be found throughout parts of southern and eastern Africa and can be found in larger herds.  Although not all wildebeest migrate, the migration of this species across Africa has been largely documented and is an amazing spectacle.  When threatened they will generally herd up, however they are extremely powerful and when pressed will stand up to even lions.
The Waterbuck is a very common species of antelope, which includes thirty-seven subspecies.  Standing about four foot tall at the shoulders and weighing up to six hundred pounds, the waterbuck is a good sized animal.  As the name implies, this species of antelope has a huge dependency on water and can easily become dehydrated in hot climates.  This animal will typically be found feeding in the early morning hours and will seek out vegetation located near a fresh water source.

Tsessebe

The springbuck, or springbok, is a medium sized antelope that can be found in southern Africa.  This species is extremely fast and has remarkable leaping abilities, traveling at speeds of up to sixty miles per hour and jumping over twelve feet.  The springbuck can be found in three different colorations white to reddish brown to dark brown.
