Almost hunted and trapped to extinction in the early nineteen hundreds, the Gray Wolf thrives in large numbers today throughout the United States.  In Alaska alone, the population is currently estimated to exceed ten thousand animals, and an additional roughly five thousand within the continental United States.  The Gray Wolf is an apex predator in many areas, feeding on large hoofed mammals including but not limited to deer, elk, cattle, moose, and caribou.  Reintroduced populations of wolves have rapidly grown in numbers and in some areas of the United States are consider nuisance predators.
